چکیده

The passage of a multi-bunch beam through an X-band accelerator with cells and structures misaligned gives rise to wakefields which disrupt succeeding bunches. As a consequence, there is growth in the overall emittance of the final colliding bunches. Here we study this process in the context of a JLC-NLC which employs the recently developed RDDS (Rounded Damped Detuned Structures) accelerators with 120 s fill time and drives a 90 bunch, 250 ns bunch train. We investigate cumulative beam break-up (BBU) under various parameter regimes appropriate to the structure which is in the process of being fabricated by KEK and SLAC. We compute the resultant emittance growth by means of analytical expressions and find good agreement with the results we obtain from a particle tracking code. We set misalignment tolerences by specifying allowable emittance growth.

Optimized Wakefield Suppression & Emittance Dilution-imposed Alignment Tolerances in X-band Accelerating Structures for the Jlc/nlc

In order to prevent electrical breakdown occurring in the JLC/NLC (Japanese Linear Collider/Next Linear Collider) X-band structures several new structures are under investigation. These accelerating structures represent an evolutionary design of the DDS series of structures [1]. The phase advance per cell has been varied and the detailed elliptical shape of the cell has been varied in order to ...

Emittance Dilution Simulations for Normal Conducting and Superconducting Linear Colliders

Abstract An electron (or positron) multi-bunch train traversing several thousand accelerator structures can be distorted by the long-range wakefields left behind accelerated bunches. These wakefields can at the very least, give rise to a dilution in the emittance of the beam and, at worst can lead to a beam break up instability. We investigate the emittance dilution that occurs for various freq...

Beam Based Alignment at the Kek Accelerator Test Facility

The KEK Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) damping ring is a prototype low emittance source for the NLC/JLC linear collider. To achieve the goal normalized vertical emittance γεy = 20 nm-rad, magnet placement accuracy better than 30 μm must be achieved. Accurate beam-based alignment (BBA) is required. The ATF arc optics uses a FOBO cell with two horizontally focusing quadrupoles, two sextupoles an...

Operation and Expected Performance of the NLC

‘The main linacs for the proposed Next Linear Collider (NLC) provide acceleration of up to 500 GeV per beam. The linacs operate in a regime where unavoidable imperfections and even natural ground motion cause significant emittance dilutions. In order to achieve the NLC luminosity goals, small emittance beams must be transported with an emittance growth of less than SLAC-PUB-7354 November 1996 O...

Impedance Measurement Setup for Higher-order Mode Studies in Nlc Accelerating Structures with the Wire Method

Dipole modes are the main cause of transverse emittance dilution in the Japanese Linear Collider / Next Linear Collider (JLC/NLC). A diagnostic setup has been built in order to investigate them. The method is based on using a coaxial wire to excite and measure electromagnetic modes of accelerating structures. This method can offer a more efficient and less expensive procedure than the ASSET fac...
